Laconia (Lakonia), bordering with Arcadia and Messinia is the southern most point of the Peloponnese. Laconia is the prefecture in which the famous towns of Mystras, Gythio and Sparta are situated. Sparta, the capital of Laconia, was founded in 1836 by settlers who were made homeless after the destruction of Mystras during the War of Independence. Today, modern Sparta shows little connection with the city-state of ancient times that was so dominant during the 6th to 4th centuries BC. Up until the time of Alexander the Great, Sparta and Athens were the two most powerful city-states in all of Greece.

Viele der griechischen Inseln sind beliebte Urlaubsziele, weil die Inseln landschaftlich schon sind, weil die Bewohner sehr freundlich sind, weil das touristische Angebot gross ist, und nicht zuletzt, weil das Reiseziel innert weniger Flugstunden erreicht werden kann.
Die griechischen Inseln unterteilen sich grob in drei Inselgruppen: A) Die Ionischen Inseln, im Ionischen Meer, welches nach einer Geliebten des Zeus, der Io, einer Tochter des Flussgottes Inachos, benannt wurde. B) ie Agaischen Inseln, C) Inseln im offenen Mittelmeer. Wurde man jeden auch noch so kleinen Felsbrocken der irgendwo rund um Griechenland aus dem Meer ragt als Insel mit dazu zahlen, konnte man beinahe 10.000 griechische Inseln zahlen. Aber jeder kleine Felsbrocken macht ja noch keine Insel. Von den grosseren griechischen Inseln sind rund 230 bewohnt, wovon wiederum nur rund 78 dieser bewohnten griechischen Inseln mehr als 100 Einwohner zahlen.
