Sitting on a hill above the village Ano Mera, the castle ruins were originally built by a Venetian family to keep watch over the village. During this time the Gyzi Family ruled the whole of Mykonos and even erected strong wall defenses to hold off enemy attacks.
During the in the 14th-century invasion of the Ottoman empire, however, the castle was abandoned.
Today, visitors can enter the ruins and admire the unique architecture; from stones cut into squares, to arched windows and doorways.
You’ll find the ruins of Gyzi Castle, 100m north of the monestary in Paleokastro, Ano Mera.
